The Keystone Canoe Club was organized in 1973 in an effort to promote the sports of canoeing and kayaking. We focus on the needs of paddlers with an emphasis on enjoying the water safely and protecting the environment. Whether your interest is recreational kayaking, canoeing, sea kayaking, whitewater, or racing, we have members with similar interests.
We are based near Reading, which is in Berks County, PA. Many of the club meetings, trips and events are not far from our local area. We enjoy the Schuylkill River, Little Schuylkill, the Lehigh River plus Blue Marsh and Marsh Creek Lakes. We also plan trips to Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, Pinelands Rivers of New Jersey, the Delaware River along the PA - NY border and additional Whitewater Rivers when there are dam releases. We also do short hikes and bike rides on the Schuylkill River Trail, Perkiomen Trail, Lehigh Trail, and other locations.
We hold regular meetings, which include paddling-related programs from 7-9 PM, on the fourth Tuesday of March, April, May, September, October, November plus a picnic in the summer We also host a holiday party in early December. The meetings and party are held at Muhlenberg Township Recreation Building off River Road, which is an exit off Rte. 12. See the schedule tab for more information and use the Contact form for questions. The Membership tab will tell you how to join the club.
We offer educational programs including:
Paddling Workshop to the general public, through the Berks County Recreation Department each summer.
'Roll Sessions' in late winter, which are held in a large indoor pool at Muhlenberg High School in Laureldale. Here, paddlers can learn self-rescue techniques, particularly the roll.
'Rescue Clinic', when needed, which teaches easy techniques to tow another boat and to get back into your boat if you swim accidently in bigger, deeper water such as a lake or bay.
We hope you will consider joining one of our fun paddling events! See the Schedule for dates and times!
